MR MOL, 2023
steel, glass, mirror glass, tubes, pumps, stirrer, measurement and control technology, bacteria (including Cupriavidus necator), 350 x 160 x 130 cm
exhibition view WHOLE DEARTH CATALOG & GOOD ROTTEN GOODS, gallery Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Vienna 2023
The sculpture MR MOL serves as a bioreactor for cultivating bacteria (including Cupriavidus necator). The bacteria produce the biopolymer PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate), which replaces petroleum-based plastics such as polypropylene.
The bacteria are cultivated in a two-stage process using different culture media: in MS MOL bacteria are reproduced and in MR MOL PHB is produced as a storage substance.
