The sculpture PHANTOM is made up of two hemispheres and represents the abstracted head of the fruit fly Drosophila. Over a thousand crystals, each fitted with a point of light, together form a pair of compound eyes that register the movements of visitors passing. They interactively observe their surroundings and at the same time reflect what they see back onto the crystalline surface. The fly‘s head, reminiscent of a mediatised globe, imagines the world not down to the last detail but, just like an insect, sensualises it as a sequence of movements and colour gradients.
