Octoplasma cell-sculpture
OCTOPLASMA, 2017
glass, human liver cells (hepatocytes) with fibroblasts, formalin, aluminium, plastic, 70 x 43 cm
biotechnological realisation: Thomas Seppi, Department of Radiotherapy and Radiooncology, Medical University of Innsbruck

The OCTOPLASMA sculpture was grown by colonising a three-dimensional matrix with human liver cells (hepatocytes) and fibroblasts in vitro in a bioreactor. Preservation was carried out in a formalin solution, as for medical specimens. The form is a hybrid and consists of an anatomical representation of a human liver and an octopus.
