MANNA MACHINE III
MANNA MACHINE III, 2008
algae (Chlorella vulgaris), acrylic glass, pumps, plastic tubes, neon-lights, 130 x 130 x 130 cm
exhibition view BIOS. Konzepte des Lebens in der zeitgenössischen Skulptur, Georg-Kolbe-Museum, Berlin 2012

The sculptures MANNA MACHINE are photobioreactors in which algae (Chlorella vulgaris) grow. The tubes and hoses form a drawing in space and are used for photosynthesis, similar to the leaves of a plant. The resulting biomass is filtered, dried and processed into pigment. Fixed in oil or resin, the algae pigment becomes the painting material for the painting series HARVEST.
Additionally fermented and distilled, the algae are processed into the spirit TONO BUNGAY.
