A signal circulates between five servers in Los Angeles, Windhoek, Dar es Salaam, Mumbai and Bishkek, which needs different time periods to overcome the distances depending on the size and condition of the respective networks and connection lines.
The measured time intervals that the signal needs to travel from one server to the next are correlated with the actual geographical distances and transferred from a Java applet to a world map. The result is a real-time metric distortion of the map that is updated after each cycle of the ping signal.
